The Greedy Monster Lesson Plan

    Before reading the story

      1. Ask students to look at the cover of the book and ask them:

         What colours can they see?

         What is the monster's name?

         Why is is greedy?

What kind of food does it like?

     2. Introduce / revise food items by using flashcards

    3. Give students a similar worksheet and  call out the name of the food item. Students should call out the equivalent letter of the picture. Repeat the procedure by calling out a letter ans asking students to say the ffod item. If you want to add a bit of competition you can divide the class into As and Bs!

While reading the story

1. Read the story once and ask students to tick the food items that they listen on their worksheet

2. Read the story a second time and ask sstudents to write the numbers of the food items on the relevant picture eg 3 humbergers

3. Use your class puppet to narrate the story. Tell students that the puppet's memory is not very good and that it might make mistakes. If they listen to a mistake while the puppet narrates the story they should shout STOP! and correct the puppet.

After reading the story

 Feed the Greedy Monster Game

1. Ask students to colour the food items on their worksheet.  Alternatively, you can do 'Colour Dictation' if you wish to revise colours eg 'Colour the banana yellow' or 'Colour the pear green'

2. Ask students to cut the coloured food items and get them in groups of 4 students. One of students in each group deals all the cards so that each student has 5 cards.

3. Give each group a Greedy Monster paper bag (like the one below) and tell students: 'The Greedy Monster likes bananas' (the students who have a banana card can feed the Greedy Monster). Then you can say 'The Greedy Monster doesn't like lollipops' (even if a student has a lollipop card, s/he can't feed it ot the Greedy Monster) and proceed with 10 - 15 more sentences.  The winner is the group which has fed the Greedy Monster the most food items.

VARIATION: Students get in groups. Give them a Greedy Monster bag, a dice and ask them to deal evenly all of the food item cards that there are in their group.  Students take turns and roll the dice. Depending on they get they feed the Greedy Monster. For instance, if one gets three then  s/he can say: 'The Greedy monster likes bananas, pears and hamburgers' and so on.  The winner is the student that gets rid all of his/her cards first.
