The Pizza Friends Lesson Plan
This story was inspired by a speaking activity aiming at helping students practice speaking, listening and using the Present Simple Tense (question and answer).
Before reading the story
1. Show the cover of the book to the students and ask them:
How many children can you see?
Why are they called the Pizza Friends?
Do you like pizza?
What do you like on your pizza?
2. Elicit as many food items as possible and make a word cloud in the shape of a pizza either handmade or using Wordart!
While reading the story
1. Read the story once and ask the students to check on the word cloud the food items they listen from the story.
2. Read the story again and ask students to note down the Pizza Friends.
After reading the story
Play the Pizza Friends Game
1. Use 9 flashcards of different food items. They could be the ones mentioned in the story or any others you wish your students to practice with.
2. Show the food flashcards one after the other and every time ask: ‘Do you like cheese/ tomato/ chocolate…. on your pizza?’ Try to elicit answers from the students like ‘Yes, I do’ or ‘No, I don’t’.
3. Draws a big pizza on the board and stick the flashcard on it while saying ‘I like cheese/ tomato/ chocolate…. on my pizza.'
4. When all flashcards are on the board ask students to make their own pizza by using ONLY THREE of the food items they see on the board. At that point students should keep their drawing to themselves.
5. When everyone is ready ask the students to go around the classroom with their drawing and try to find the person who has made the same pizza by asking questions like: ‘Do you like cheese on your pizza?’ etc
6. At the end of the activity students must have found at least one pizza friend (this depends on the class size) and present their preferences to the rest of their classmates eg ‘We like cheese, tomato and ham on our pizza’.
7. Display all pizzas in groups on a notice board to be used for future reference and vocabulary revision.
Add your personal touch
Crazy Pizzas!!!
This activity will definately boost students’ creativity and add humour in the lesson!
1. Encourage students to make a crazy pizza. Follows the same steps as above but this time use unconventional food items for a pizza like broccoli, lemons, lollipops etc
2. Students design their version of a crazy fruit salad and present it to their classmates
Variation
Using the same steps we could help students revise / practice different food items and create ‘Fruit Salad Friends, Muffin Mates, Ice cream Bodies etc'
We can also use Do you like broccoli ice cream? Super Simple song and reinforce the use of
question "Do you like...? Yes, I do!/ No, I don't!'
